Over the past 12 months, Brisbane duo OKBadlands have wowed listeners time and time again with their special brand of jazz-infused electronic pop.
After receiving 5/5 stars on their Unearthed profile for previous single “PTY LD”, to supporting Cloud Control for their sold out shows last month and playing Maroochy Music Festival and BIGSOUND Festival in the coming months, OKBadlands have now returned with another sparkling gem from their upcoming EP – the silky smooth new track “Mineral”.
Forming in 2015 when best pals Kate Gurren and Sally Latter followed through with every teen girls dream of starting a band - the duo started recording their very-unofficial and very-casual jam sessions. Originally just for the hangs, the sessions quickly became a vital means of expression and creativity.
Kate (a jazz student) and Sally (a bass player) used this time to experiment with various instruments and textures, and OKBadlands was born.
With previous track “Dust & Gold” praised as “Soulful and smooth in the best of ways” (Zan Rowe, Triple J), and “stunning and soul-drenched vocals with production that hums” (The AU review) and “PTY LTD” described as “beautiful waves of melody” (Dom Alessio, Triple J) and “lush vocal harmonies and layering of different elements allow it to pick up the pace while somehow remaining delicate” (Purple Sneakers), OKBadlands have once again weaved their trademark soulful vocal harmonies with delicate and unhurried beats, leaving you dazzled and wanting more.
Self-produced, recorded, and arranged – once again with a little help from Max Byrne (Golden Vessel) in the beats chair - new single “Mineral” is about relationships that strengthen through difference and pressure.
“Friendship is probably our strongest theme” says bass player Sally Latter, “Kate and I have been friends since we were young and played music together in various contexts the whole time we have known each other. So music & our relationship runs parallel. In the same way, we've also developed alongside each other, both as people and in improving at our instruments and learning to produce... I do think that it's our differences that make both our writing and friendship better”
Showcasing smooth hypnotising vocals weaving over a simple layered groove, “Mineral” channels a unique ability to create immense beauty and emotion from the simple and delicate. “Mineral” will be available to purchase/stream on all platforms Friday July 14th.
